Netherlands-based AMG Critical Materials has established a new company, NewMOX SAS in Grenoble, France, to service the nuclear fuel market. NewMOX is a subsidiary of ALD Vacuum Technologies based in Hanau, Germany. ALD is AMG’s engineering subsidiary focused on vacuum furnace technology, which includes sintering furnace systems enabling the production of commercial nuclear fuel from plutonium and depleted uranium mixed oxides (mox). ALD’s MOX technology has been applied in Germany, the USA, France, Belgium, the UK and recently ALD has been delivering furnace systems to China. ALD inherited the mox technology from Degussa AG, ALD’s former owner (later renamed Evonik AG).

A new report, “Synchronizing energy transitions towards possible Net-Zero for India: Affordable and clean energy for all”, has been launched by Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India. The report was prepared by the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) under a project agreed in November 2021 by the PSA Office. The aims of the project were to carry out a comprehensive study looking at methods for minimising the cost of power at the consumer end and to work out an optimum mix for all sources of power to reach net-zero emissions.

Restarting uranium mining in Western Australia could create up to 9000 jobs and produce uranium worth more than AUD1 billion a year, a 12-month inquiry by the state's Chamber of Commerce and Industry has found. It recommends that the state overturn its ban on uranium mining to unlock significant economic benefits.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has witnessed the start of fuel loading at the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu. The PFBR is a 500 MWe sodium-cooled fast breeder nuclear reactor being constructed at Kokkilamedu, near Kalpakkam. The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) designed the reactor based on the decades of experience gained from operating the lower power Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR).

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated to the nation the Demonstration Fast Reactor Fuel Reprocessing Plant (DFRP) at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) at Kalpakkam in Chengalpattu district. The DFPR was built at a cost of about INR4bn ($48m) and is the world's only industrial-scale plant capable of handling both carbide and oxide used fuels from fast reactors, according to an official statement.
