Canadian federal Crown corporation Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and AtkinsRéalis (part of the SNC-Lavalin Group) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the successful deployment of Candu reactors in Canada and internationally and to expand their intellectual property licensing agreement (IPLA).

Romanian nuclear utility Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have signed a loan agreement worth €145m ($159m) to support completion of Europe’s first Tritium Removal Facility (CTRF) at the Cernavoda NPP. The CTRF will remove the tritium from reactor’s coolant and moderator (heavy water), leading to increased protection of the environment, public and employees’ occupational health and safety.

AtkinsRéalis (formerly SNC-Lavalin Group) unveiled its new Candu Monark reactor design at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris. The 1,000 MWe Candu Monark, with the highest output of any Candu technology, is currently in the definition phase. AtkinsRéalis says “it leverages Candu technology's tested and reliable design features together with the most modern and advanced engineering solutions; a Canadian solution for utilities faced with meeting the dual demands of net zero and energy security”.

Romanian nuclear utility Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) has signed a €525m ($576m) contract to extend the life of unit 1 at the Cernavoda NPP with Candu Energy (part of AtkinsRéalis) and the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC), a federal state corporation. Entry into force of the contract, signed at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, is subject to approval by the SNN General Meeting of Shareholders, with CCC receiving final approval from the Canadian government.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed a consortium agreement with Romanian nuclear utility Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN), Canada’s Candu Energy and Italy’s Ansaldo Nucleare, to jointly support refurbishment of unit 1 at Romania’s Cernavoda NPP. The refurbishment will extend the operational life of the reactor, which was commissioned in 1996. The 700 MWe Candu-6 has a design life of 30 years and the current operating licence is set to expire by the end of 2026.

Canada’s Laurentis Energy Partners (LEP), a subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation (OPG), have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate with Romanian nuclear utility, SN Nuclearelectricia (SNN), on the production of medical isotopes at the Cernavoda NPP and also to explore the possibility of heavy water production in Romania.

Canada and Romania have signed a CAD3bn ($2.2bn) export development deal to support construction of two new units at the Cernavoda NPP. Canadian Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said the financing offer for Romania’s national nuclear operator, Nuclearelectrica, to buy supplies or services from Canadian companies.
