On the political front, US president Joe Biden signed into law new legislation that will help to finance struggling nuclear reactors and could save dozens from being shut down early. In Europe, the nuclear industry celebrated when members of the European parliament decided to “follow the science” and support legislation which includes nuclear in the bloc’s sustainable finance taxonomy for green investment.

The US government has decided to provide $14m (€13.2m) worth of funding for a front-end engineering and design study which is to provide the basis for the deployment of a small modular reactor (SMR) power plant in Romania.

US President Joe Biden made the announcement at this weekend’s G7 leaders’ summit in Schloss Elmau, Germany, where he presented US initiatives to form part of a newly set up Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII).

The PGII aims to reduce global infrastructure gaps, strengthen economies and supply chains and will mobilise $600bn for investment by 2027, about a third of which will be provided by the US.

Australia is to acquire nuclear submarines as the first initiative under a new enhanced trilateral security partnership announced by the leaders of Australia, the UK and the USA. The US-led Leaders’ Summit on Climate, held on 22 and 23 April as a video conference, attracted 40 world leaders (presidents and prime ministers) including Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
