Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organisation (NWMO) has published new research – the 2023 Confidence in Safety reports – on the two potential sites under consideration to host a deep geological repository (DGR) for used nuclear fuel. NWMO says the reports reinforce confidence in safety of both sites, building on the previous 2022 Confidence in Safety reports. They support the conclusion that the NWMO is confident a DGR can be constructed at either site to safely and responsibly manage Canada’s used nuclear fuel for the long term.

The organisation responsible for the safe, long-term management of Canada's intermediate and high-level radioactive waste said the latest annual reports reinforce its confidence that a deep geologic repository for used nuclear fuel can be constructed at either of the two sites that remain under consideration.

While many agree the benefits of using nuclear energy to fight climate change and build energy security are clear, there is still a major hurdle to overcome before it is widely accepted as a safe and clean part of the energy mix: the perception that the nuclear industry has a waste "problem", writes Laurie Swami, president and CEO of Canada's Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO).

Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) said it now anticipates that it will identify a preferred site by autumn 2024. NWMO has been engaged in a process to identify a site for a deep geological repository since 2012. “Site selection is a critical milestone, marking the beginning of a new series of activities, including the regulatory decision-making process,” it said. “With a project of such complexity and generational scope, we have always anticipated that we will need to adapt over the course of the process, while also keeping an eye on the long view.”

Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organisation (NWMO) said it had completed a full-scale demonstration of the engineered barriers that will safely contain and isolate Canada’s used nuclear fuel in a deep geological repository. This was the culmination of more than eight years of preparation, including the design and fabrication of specialised prototype equipment and components by the NWMO’s team of technical specialists and engineering partners.
