UK-based nuclear fusion company Tokamak Energy said it is developing new laser measurement technology crucial for controlling extreme conditions inside future fusion power plants and delivering clean energy to the grid.

However, “we reached record results in almost all areas, in terms of our main, gross indicators”. He noted that implementation of the state defence order was 100%. French start-up Renaissance Fusion, based in Grenoble and Houston, has raised $16.4m in funding in a seed round led by Lowercarbon Capital. Renaissance Fusion, founded in 2019 by Francesco Volpe and Martin Kupp, is working to develop a stellarator reactor. The company expects to be able to ship a small fusion reactor with a 1 GWe capacity in the 2030s. It does not plan to operate the plants directly but will sell its reactors to plant constructors and operators.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has developed a new laser-welding ‘robotic snake’ capable of operating inside fusion energy power plant pipework. The DEMO snake, which is now patented technology, will be deployed and operated remotely inside a hazardous environment without being touched by humans. It can also work effectively in pipes packed together, with little space for access.
