The USA's Colorado State University (CSU) and German laser fusion developer Marvel Fusion have established a public-private partnership to support construction of a $150m high-power laser and fusion research facility at Fort Collins on the CSU Foothills Campus. The facility is expected to become an international epicenter for research into inertial fusion energy, lasers and photonics, and high energy density physics under the partnership. CSU said that, pending finalisation of the financial details by the CSU System Board of Governors, the partnership will establish Fort Collins as a nexus for laser fusion research and deliver significant positive impacts to Colorado.

Thales and Germany’s Marvel Fusion will cooperate in upgrading the laser system of the Extreme Light Infrastructure for Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) in Magurele, Romania. With the upgraded laser, Marvel Fusion aims to validate key aspects of its technology for fusion energy. This will make Marvel Fusion the first private company to establish a scientific collaboration at the world's most powerful laser facility ELI-NP. For Thales, this will strengthen its leadership position in the design, development and manufacturing of solid-state lasers for science, industry, and space.

US-based TAU Systems is poised to bring particle accelerators to a multitude of users by harnessing the latest laser technology. Until now high-energy particle accelerators have been the exclusive domain of countries and governmental organisations. Because of their enormous size and very high cost, access for engineers and biotech professionals is severely limited. TAU Systems will use the latest laser technology to make electrons surf on three-dimensional plasma waves and accelerate them to ultra-high energies.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has developed a new laser-welding ‘robotic snake’ capable of operating inside fusion energy power plant pipework. The DEMO snake, which is now patented technology, will be deployed and operated remotely inside a hazardous environment without being touched by humans. It can also work effectively in pipes packed together, with little space for access.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani on 10 April unveiled 133 new nuclear achievements in the provinces of Tehran, Markazi, Isfahan, Alborz and Qom to mark the 15th anniversary of the National Nuclear Technology Day. In a ceremony held via videoconference he gave the order for Iranian scientists to begin injecting uranium hexafluoride gas to a pilot cascade of 164 new generation IR6 centrifuges at the Natanz enrichment facility. He also announced that Iran has started mechanical testing of IR-9 centrifuges and launched an assembly line for their production.
