Hitachi announced today it will end its business operations on the Wylfa Newydd nuclear power plant construction project, which it had suspended in January 2019 "because it was clear that further time was needed to decide on a financing structure". Horizon Nuclear Power, the UK project developer that Hitachi acquired in November 2012, said it will now take steps for the "orderly closing down" of all its current development activities, but will "keep the lines of communication open" with government and other key stakeholders regarding future options at both its sites, which in addition to Wylfa Newydd on Anglesey, include Oldbury on Severn in South Gloucestershire.

Horizon Nuclear Power today outlined the procedure it will follow now that its new-build projects have been suspended. The UK subsidiary of Japan’s Hitachi said it had made substantial progress with its plans to provide at least 5.4 GWe of new capacity across two sites - Wylfa Newydd, in north Wales, and Oldbury-on-Severn, in southwest England - by deploying Hitachi-GE UK advanced boiling reactors (UK ABWRs).

Horizon Nuclear Power has announced that the new nuclear power station it plans to build on Anglesey in Wales will be called 'Wylfa Newydd.'
The name, which means 'New Wylfa,' draws on the heritage of the existing Wylfa facility and recognises the opportunities and benefits the new plant will bring to the island in the years ahead.
The new name was unveiled during an evening reception held on Anglesey with key local partners and stakeholders on 14 November. The project had previously been referred to as Wylfa B.
Horizon, which was acquired by Hitachi in November 2012, said that designs are being worked up for two Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) units at the Wylfa Newydd site. These proposals, along with more details on the construction timetable, will be set out in detail in the second half of 2014.

The UK has announced plans to shutdown the Wylfa 2 magnox reactor on 30 April. The move comes just two months after Oldbury 2 closed and will leave the UK with just one of first generation gas cooled reactors left in its fleet of nuclear power plants.
