The Biden Administration opposes the use of Yucca Mountain for the storage of used nuclear fuel and is committed to developing "safe and workable" alternatives, US President Joe Biden's nominee for the position of energy secretary has said. Jennifer Granholm made her remarks at a Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources hearing to consider her nomination, which was held on 27 January.

Japan said on 1 April that it will give up more of its highly enriched uranium (HEU) in a bid to tighten control over unused nuclear material. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington of a new plan to remove HEU from the Kyoto University Critical Assembly in Osaka Prefecture, in addition to a similar pledge made in the previous meeting of the biennial summit in 2014.

Under the US fiscal 2016 Omnibus Appropriations Act signed into law by President Barack Obama on 18 December, nuclear energy programmes will receive $986m in fiscal year 2016 (ending 30 September), an increase of $80m, or 9%, over the budget request.
