The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Savannah River Site (SRS) says the H Canyon facility recently initiated actions to recycle a small amount of used highly enriched uranium (HEU) stored in the Site’s H Area in order to down-blend it into high-assay low enriched uranium (HALEU). “The projected demand for HALEU far exceeds the current supply,” said HALEU Programme Manager Jeff Hasty for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, the site’s managing and operating contractor.

Countries around the world turned to nuclear as a reliable low-carbon energy source as they looked for ways to wean themselves off Russian imports and lower carbon emissions.

New plants began operating, deals for small modular reactors were signed and countries announced ambitious plans for new-build.

On the political front, US president Joe Biden signed into law new legislation that will help to finance struggling nuclear reactors and could save dozens from being shut down early. In Europe, the nuclear industry celebrated when members of the European parliament decided to “follow the science” and support legislation which includes nuclear in the bloc’s sustainable finance taxonomy for green investment.

Work has begun on the construction of a $300m nuclear fuel fabrication plant for next-generation nuclear reactors in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

X-energy’s Triso-X facility is being funded initially as part of a $3.2bn federal programme to develop, build and demonstrate advanced reactors. The goal is for the plant to be commissioned and operational by 2025.

The fuel produced at the facility will be used in X-energy’s Xe-100 high-temperature gas reactors, expected to be operational by 2028. The first project would be a 320 MW four-unit Xe-100 power plant in Washington state.

The US Department of Energy said the fuel fabrication facility has the capacity to produce eight metric tonnes per year of Triso pebble fuel, enough to power 12 of X-energy’s proposed Xe-100 SMRs. The facility would also be capable of manufacturing TRISO fuel for other advanced reactor designs. X-energy said it plans to double its fuel production by the 2030s.

Courtesy X-energy US-based nuclear company X-energy has completed a six-year project that resulted in it finalising the basic design of its Xe-100 high-temperature gas reactor technology and fabricating its first Triso fuel pebbles using natural uranium at a pilot-scale fuel facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the US Department of Energy said.

The technology development project, backed by a $40m award from the DOE, was instrumental in paving a path toward the company’s multi-billion-dollar demonstration project and the nation’s first commercial facility to produce high-assay low-enriched uranium (Haleu)-based fuel for next-generation reactors.

The Maryland-based company expects the Xe-100 to be operational by 2028 thanks to funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law through the newly established office of clean energy demonstrations.

X-energy received its $40m award, known as an advanced reactor concepts award, in 2015 to develop the Xe-100 design and Triso-X particle fuel. The pilot-scale fuel facility at Oak Ridge was commissioned as part of the project.
