Centrus Energy Corp has made its first delivery of High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) to the US Department of Energy, (DOE). This completes Phase One of its contract with DOE by demonstrating its HALEU production process. Phase Two will now begin, which requires a full year of HALEU production at the rate of 900 kilograms a year using its American Centrifuge Plant (ACO) in Piketon, Ohio.

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Nuclear says American Centrifuge Operating (ACO), a subsidiary of Centrus Energy Corp, is moving closer to operating an advanced centrifuge cascade in Piketon, Ohio, to produce US’s first high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) which is needed to develop and deploy advanced reactors. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recently cleared the facility to start up enrichment operations and the demonstration project is on track to produce 20 kilograms of HALEU before the end of the year, according to DOE.

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Savannah River Site (SRS) says the H Canyon facility recently initiated actions to recycle a small amount of used highly enriched uranium (HEU) stored in the Site’s H Area in order to down-blend it into high-assay low enriched uranium (HALEU). “The projected demand for HALEU far exceeds the current supply,” said HALEU Programme Manager Jeff Hasty for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, the site’s managing and operating contractor.

The Consortium will help to inform DOE activities to secure a domestic supply of HALEU, which is considered crucial for the development and deployment of advanced reactors in the USA. It also may include organisations whose facilities are in ally or partner nations designated by DOE.

The US Congress voted to approve appropriations for fiscal year 2021 that includes USD1.5 billion for the Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy. The appropriations also include USD150 million to initiate the uranium reserve programme to address challenges to the production of domestic uranium.

If passed into law, it would provide full funding for the Department of Energy to begin the funding required to stimulate growth in the domestic uranium mining industry.
The US has the world's largest reactor fleet of 94 commercial nuclear reactors producing about 20% of its electricity, yet its uranium mining industry is struggling. Production has been on a steady decline since the early 1980s as nuclear power plant operators replaced domestic uranium production with less expensive imports.
Under the uranium reserve programme, the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy would buy uranium directly from domestic mines and contract for uranium conversion services. The DOE has said that the new stockpile is expected to support the operation of at least two US uranium mines, reestablish active conversion capabilities, and ensure a backup supply of uranium for nuclear power operators in the event of a market disruption.
