The US Department of Energy’s Innovation Network for Fusion Energy (INFUSE) programme has awarded US-based Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) three new grants to fund research & development projects with the University of California at Berkeley, Princeton Plasma Physics Lab, and University of California at Los Angeles. The INFUSE award programme is intended to accelerate fusion energy development through public-private research partnerships.

US Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) said on 24 August that it was expanding modelling software to support nuclear safety and regulatory activities related to advanced reactor designs. Nuclear power is a significant source of steady carbon-neutral electricity, making the design and construction of new and next-generation nuclear reactors critical for achieving US green energy goals, SNL noted.

In order to help the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) evaluate the safety of the next generation of nuclear power reactors, fuel cycle facilities and fuel technologies, researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have been expanding their severe accident modelling computer code, called Melcor, to work with different reactor geometries, fuel types and coolant systems.

California-based TAE Technologies said on 8 April that it had raised an additional $280 million for its reactor-scale demonstration fusion facility to support the final step toward its commercialisation. The private fusion energy company announced a technology milestone by producing stable plasma at more than 50 million degrees Celsius in a proprietary compact reactor design that can scale to competitive fusion-generated power. “This milestone furthers confidence in TAE’s path to commercialisation,” the company said noting that the additional funding brings the total raised to more than $880 million “from some of the world’s most sophisticated investors”.

Scientists at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in the USA have released a new design for a compact fusion reactor that can generate electricity and help define the technology necessary for commercial fusion power, General Atomics (GA) said on 29 March. The approach is based on the “Advanced Tokamak” concept pioneered by the DIII-D program, which enables a higher-performance, self-sustaining configuration that holds energy more efficiently than in typical pulsed configurations, allowing it to be built at a reduced scale and cost.
