Hundreds of former staff gathered to mark the achievements of the Joint European Torus (JET) in progressing nuclear fusion. The project has been a positive example of international collaboration, those attending were told, and the European Union hopes the UK will rejoin its Euratom and Fusion4Energy programme from 2028.

The UK Government announced that UK researchers can now apply for grants and bid to take part in projects under Europe’s Horizon science R&D programme. The UK will be participating as a fully associated member for the remaining life of the programme to 2027. UK membership. The announcement also stated that the UK will associate to Copernicus, the European Union’s (EU's) Earth observation programme. However, it will not associate to the Euratom Research & Training programme (Euratom R&T) and by extension, the Fusion for Energy (F4E) Programme although there is an agreement to cooperate specifically on nuclear fusion.

The UK government says its preference remains reaching agreement with the European Union to participate in the Horizon Europe, Euratom and Copernicus programmes, but has also published a prospectus for its "bold and ambitious alternative" plans.

The long-term operation (LTO) of the existing fleet of nuclear power reactors will help the European Union achieve its emission reduction targets at an affordable cost, according to European nuclear trade body Foratom. In an updated position paper, it says the LTO of existing units will help achieve the interim 2030 targets, reduce the EU's energy import dependency and support the integration of a higher share of renewables.

The UK Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said on 24 December that the UK and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) had signed a Nuclear Cooperation Agreement (NCA) which was a “separate agreement from the wider UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement” finally agreed as part of the Brexit negotiations.

Members of Parliament today approved legislation that will pass the UK-EU post-Brexit deal into UK law, in a vote split 521 in favour and 73 against. The EU (Future Relationship) Bill now passes to the House of Lords for its approval. Once that upper chamber of parliament also agrees to the bill, the Queen will be asked to give her consent, known as Royal Assent.

The UK and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) have signed a Nuclear Cooperation Agreement (NCA). This is separate from the wider UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement that was also announced on 24 December and which has since been approved by ambassadors from the 27 EU Member States, paving the way for it to take effect on 1 January. UK lawmakers will tomorrow return to the House of Commons, the lower chamber of parliament, to vote on the so-called post-Brexit trade deal.

The UK and the European Commission signed a contract extension today for the world’s largest fusion research facility, Joint European Torus (JET). The extension secures at least EUR100 million (USD112 million) in additional inward investment from the EU over the next two years and "brings reassurance" for the more than 500 staff at the site in Culham, near Oxford, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) said.

Horizon Nuclear Power today outlined the procedure it will follow now that its new-build projects have been suspended. The UK subsidiary of Japan’s Hitachi said it had made substantial progress with its plans to provide at least 5.4 GWe of new capacity across two sites - Wylfa Newydd, in north Wales, and Oldbury-on-Severn, in southwest England - by deploying Hitachi-GE UK advanced boiling reactors (UK ABWRs).
