South Korea is to co-operate with the US in optimising nuclear proliferation resistance in its research reactors for export. A joint statement issued by the Korean Ministry of Science & ICT and the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) said the two countries plan to collaborate on designing research reactors and associated facilities developed by Korea under NNSA's Proliferation Resistance Optimization-X (PRO-X) programme.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) team has completed a 11-day mission to the USA hosted by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The nine-person team reviewed the nuclear security regime for nuclear material and nuclear facilities. This included an assessment of the governmental organisations and legislation relevant to physical protection, the regulatory role and processes, procedures and practices for inspection and enforcement and the sustainability of the regime.

US-based BWX Technologies subsidiary Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) has been awarded a $122m contract extension from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for the down-blending of highly enriched uranium (HEU) into low enriched uranium (LEU).

BR2 is one of the most powerful research reactors in the world contributing significantly to the global supply of medical radioisotopes and testing nuclear innovations. Since it began operating in 1962, it has been fuelled by highly enriched uranium (HEU), considered a nuclear proliferation risk. Belgium’s nuclear research centre, SCK-CEN, plans to replace this with low-enriched uranium (LEU).

A project to remove the last remaining batch of unirradiated highly enriched uranium (HEU) fuel from Kazakhstan has been completed in a joint effort by Kazakhstan and the USA, the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has announced. The two nations have also signed a new joint statement reaffirming their intention to continue to work together to support the common goal of minimising nuclear proliferation, ensuring nuclear security and strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

The DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration and Kazakhstan’s energy ministry worked together to remove 2.9 kg of unirradiated HEU from the IGR research reactor, transport it hundreds of miles to a secure facility for processing, and downblend it to low enriched uranium (LEU).
This activity fulfilled an agreement worked out between the two countries at the 2019 International Atomic Energy Agency general conference.
“The world is a little bit safer now that this material has been downblended into a less dangerous form,” said Lisa Gordon-Hagerty, NNSA administrator and under-secretary for nuclear security at the DOE.
After being removed from the IGR research reactor in Kurchatov, the unirradiated HEU fuel was transported by road in 25 special transportation casks more than 300 km to the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk.
