Japan, the UK, Canada, the US and France have agreed to co-operate to reduce dependence on Russia as a supplier of nuclear materials and technology. Their statement was issued at the Nuclear Energy Forum being held in Japan’s Sapporo alongside the meeting of Group of Seven (G7) ministers on climate, energy and environment. The agreement by Canada, France, Japan, the UK and USA to leverage their civil nuclear power sectors to ensure a stable supply of nuclear fuel for existing and future reactors came as G7 climate, energy and environment ministers concluded a two-day meeting with a promise to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels.

On his return from COP27, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has told the Agency’s Board of Governors: “At a time of great uncertainty about whether the world can keep global warming to limits that avert the worst consequences of climate change, the IAEA cooperatively is offering solutions and ways to progress.”
