Japan, the UK, Canada, the US and France have agreed to co-operate to reduce dependence on Russia as a supplier of nuclear materials and technology. Their statement was issued at the Nuclear Energy Forum being held in Japan’s Sapporo alongside the meeting of Group of Seven (G7) ministers on climate, energy and environment. It was published on the UK government website.

Advances in medical isotope diagnostics and therapy are holding promise for cancer patients, despite challenges facing the nuclear medical field in recent years related to radionuclide production and supply, rising costs, and stricter regulation.

Medical isotopes are radioactive substances used in various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to treat various types of cancers and other conditions. They are essential for modern medicine, allowing physicians to visualise and target specific organs, tissues and cells in a patient’s body.

Over more than a decade, personalised medicine using nuclear techniques has been gaining pace, allowing doctors to tailor therapies and treatments to the specific needs and physiology of a patient, and to avoid harm to healthy organs or tissues.

According to Sven Van den Berghe, chief executive of Belgium-based isotope producer PanTera, one technique that has seen significant advances is known as theranostics – the term used to describe the combination of using one radioactive drug to diagnose and a second to deliver therapy to treat the main tumour and any metastatic tumours.

The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has recently published a 73-page study, which tracks the progress of selected small modular reactor (SMR) designs towards deployment. NEA says the SMR designs are at various stages of development, from fundamental research on new concepts to commercial deployment and operation of mature designs.

Russia’s NA Dollezhal Scientific Research & Design Institute of Power Engineering (Nikiet - part of Rosatom) has completed the preliminary design of a research molten-salt reactor for the Mining & Chemical Combine (MCC) in Krasnoyarsk as part of a Russia-wide research effort. The draft design is for a reactor plant with an innovative research reactor which uses a circulating molten fuel salt (IZhSR). The work was carried out in cooperation with the National Research Centre Kurchatov Institute and a number of Rosatom enterprises. A detailed R&D programme was drawn up and approved by Rosatom, which will substantiate the design’s technical solutions, then build and put into operation the IZhSR reactor plant at MCC.

External power has been restored to Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), a few hours after its connection to the grid was cut for a second time in less than a week, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said.

France’s EDF has signed five cooperation agreements with Polish companies in the nuclear energy sector during the 5th Polish-French nuclear industry day. Agreements were signed by EDF with Uniserv, Telefonika Kable, Polimex Mostostal, Sefako and ZRE Katowice. In addition, Budimex signed an agreement with Bouygues TP.

The global uranium market has not yet been impacted by recent geopolitical events, speakers from uranium suppliers said during a session of the World Nuclear Fuel Conference 2022 in London. Rosatom said on 8 September that it had taken part in the first pilot research exercises run by the Russian Ministry for Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters (Emercom). During the  “Safe Arctic” exercises, Rosatom demonstrated operation of a mobile laser complex (MLC) for elimination of accident consequences/ the MLC was designed by the Troitsk Institute of Innovative and Thermonuclear Research (Triniti - part of Rosatom’s scientific division, JSC Science and Innovations).
