The US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) has awarded $27.3m for research & development to accelerate the Hanford Site’s tank waste clean-up mission. The funds are for 13 projects led by six national laboratories. Project duration is from two to three years. First-year funding ranges from $1.3m million to $3m per project. The laboratories and their projects are:

France’s Framatome has announced a key advance in development of monolithic molybdenum-uranium (U-Mo) fuel for Germany’s Forschungsreaktor München II (FRM II) research reactor, operated by the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Savannah River Site (SRS) says the H Canyon facility recently initiated actions to recycle a small amount of used highly enriched uranium (HEU) stored in the Site’s H Area in order to down-blend it into high-assay low enriched uranium (HALEU). “The projected demand for HALEU far exceeds the current supply,” said HALEU Programme Manager Jeff Hasty for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, the site’s managing and operating contractor.

US-based Westinghouse Electric Company has completed manufacture of a 3.7-metre-long heat pipe that will be used to support the Nuclear Test Reactor (NTR) Westinghouse aims to operate by 2026.

The 12-foot (3.7 metre) long heat pipe manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Company in a project supported by the US Department of Energy's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Project (ARDP) is one of the largest of its kind made and will be used to support a test reactor the company aims to operate in 2026.

The US Administration has issued a new report, “US Innovation to Meet 2050 Climate Goals: Assessing Initial R&D Opportunities,” setting out initial priorities that will enable it to reach net-zero by 2050. The 26-page White House report identifies five initial priorities to help the USA meet the goal of cutting greenhouse gases by 50-52% by 2030 and to achieve net-zero no later than 2050. These are:

Westinghouse Electric Company has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with 22 companies in Poland. They were signed in the presence of the US Ambassador to Poland, Mark Brzezinski, allow for cooperation on the potential construction of AP1000 reactors for the first Polish NPP and other potential AP1000 plant projects in Central Europe.

Westinghouse Electric Company have announced a partnership with EDF to explore the functionalities of Westinghouse’s EnCore enhanced Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) technology. Westinghouse will study its EnCore fuel in an EDF reactor for potential deployment across the EDF nuclear fleet after 2030. This will be the largest R&D programme on enhanced fuel that Westinghouse has conducted in Europe to date.
