Canadian utility Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has submitted a construction licence application to the national nuclear regulator which could pave the way to the deployment of a small modular reactor (SMR) at the site of the Darlington nuclear power station.

OPG said in a statement the application consists of several packages which will be consecutively provided to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) over the next six months.

The company said the application has been jointly prepared in partnership with GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), which has proposed its BWRX-300 SMR for deployment at Darlington.

The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) has finalised an agreement with nuclear utility Ontario Power Generation (OPG) that includes CAD970m ($714m, €713m) towards Canada’s first small modular reactor (SMR).

The CIB, a federal organisation that finances revenue-generating infrastructure projects, said the investment was its largest in clean power to date.

The CIB’s investment will finance Phase 1 work at OPG’s SMR project, which is to be built next to the company’s existing Darlington nuclear power station in Clarington, Ontario.

In 2021 OPG chose GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s BWRX-300 SMR for the project and aims to complete the first commercial, grid-scale unit as soon as 2028.
