Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs & Employment and the US Department of Energy (DOE) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on nuclear energy and nuclear waste management. “Its purpose is to intensify cooperation between administrations, companies and research institutes in Finland and the US concerning the peaceful use of nuclear power,” the Finnish Ministry said. The MOU was signed by the Ministry’s Director General, Riku Huttunen, and Dr Kathryn Huff, Assistant Secretary at the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy.

A floating autonomous robot could soon play a key role in safeguarding used nuclear fuel around the world. The Robotised Cherenkov Viewing Device (RCVD) has been created through a collaboration between Australian national science agency CSIRO's data and digital specialist arm Data61, Hungarian robotics company Datastart and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team of experts last week completed a follow-up nuclear security advisory mission to the Czech Republic. The two-week International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) mission included a review of the legislative and regulatory framework for the physical protection of nuclear material and associated facilities and activities, including transport.

Congress needs to take action to break the impasse over a permanent solution for commercial used nuclear fuel, according to a report from the US Government Accountability Office (GAO). The report identifies four matters for congressional consideration - including amending legislation to authorise a new consent-based siting process and restructuring the Nuclear Waste Fund - and recommends that the Department of Energy (DOE) finalise its consent-based siting process.

Finland’s Posiva, Sweden’s Svensk Kärnbränslehantering (SKB) and Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organisation have collaborated on a five-year, (2008-2013) research project, The Greenland Analogue Project (GAP), investigating ice sheet conditions, in relation to the long-term management of used nuclear fuel in a deep geological repository. The focus of the study, the Greenland Ice Sheet, is the second largest ice sheet in the world and comparable to the ice sheets predicted to extend over both Scandinavia and Canada in the future.
