World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.

Among the options for a new NPP in Armenia, the project for a Russian unit of 1,000-1,200 MWe is the best developed, according to Karen Sargsyan, Advisor at the Ministry of Territorial Administration & Infrastructure (MTAI). He was speaking at a panel discussion on the prospects for nuclear energy in Armenia organised by Rosatom and the Ministry. Sargsyan recalled that at the beginning of this year, a pre-feasibility study (preliminary feasibility study) was prepared for Armenia for the construction of a plant with a VVER-1200 reactor. Armenia and Russia signed an interstate agreement to build a 1,000-1,200 MWe plant and in May, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev held talks in Yerevan on the possible construction of a new NPP.

Türkiye plans to complete negotiations on the construction of a second NPP before the end of the year. Negotiations on the project for a second NPP, to be sited in Sinop in the north of the country, are scheduled to be completed before the end of the year, Energy Minister Fatih Donmez said. He told TRT television that Türkiye has received proposals to supply the plant from different countries and is evaluating them and that there is healthy competition.

There were 438 commercial nuclear power plants in operation in 33 countries at the end of 2022, according to data from the Swiss Nuclear Forum.

The forum said six new nuclear power plants went online in 2022 and five units were permanently shut down.

The six new plants were Olkiluoto-3 in Finland, the first new reactor to start up in Western Europe in around 15 years, Fuqing-6 and Hongyanhe-6 in China, Kanupp-3 in Pakistan, Shin-Hanul-1 in South Korea and Barakah-3 in the United Arab Emirates.
