Opening the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 29th Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2023) in London, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi began by wishing a happy 40th anniversary to the Joint European Torus (JET) which operates at Culham near Oxford. Jet was “the first tritium experiment in Europe, breaker of scientific records, producer of generations of accomplished scientists and engineers, and a true magnet for international collaboration,” he said.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, who has been reappointed for a second four-year term as Director General beginning December 2023, in his opening address to the 67th General Conference, referred to US President Dwight D Eisenhower’s ‘Atoms for Peace’ speech in 1953. He noted that his vision has become an important, active part of the IAEA’s contribution towards international peace and security and furthering sustainable development. “The IAEA is the operational instrument of this noble cause,” Grossi said.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and other IAEA officials have signed several agreements at the China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA), during Grossi’s first official visit to China. Grossi met with several high-level officials and visited nuclear facilities and institutions in Beijing, Shanghai and Shandong.

Nuclear power is "irreplaceable" and international cooperation in the technology "indispensible" in reducing global CO2 emissions, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) President Jun Gu told delegates at the International Atomic Energy Agency's International Conference on Climate Change and the Role of Nuclear Power yesterday in Vienna. Climate change may in fact be an "opportunity to create a new era for nuclear energy", he said, and CNNC is "willing to work with all countries" to bring about a clean energy transition and mitigate climate change.
