GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) has submitted a Generic Design Assessment (GDA) entry application for its BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) to the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Meanwhile, Holtec International said it intends to soon submit an application for its SMR-160 design.

Holtec International has concluded a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Czech Republic’s Škoda Praha and South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering and Construction (HDEC) to advance the planning for construction of SMR-160s in the Czech Republic. The SMR-160 is a small modular pressurised light-water reactor, generating 160MWe (525MWt) using low-enriched uranium fuel, with flexibility to produce process heat for industrial applications and hydrogen production.

US-based Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) and South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering have entered into a Framework Agreement for Procurement, extending existing collaboration in project development and deployment. The agreement, signed in Ottawa (Canada) builds on many years of collaboration between the two companies, a business cooperation agreement signed in January 2022, and an engineering agreement signed in June 2022.

North Korea confirmed on 17 August that it has resumed plutonium production and said it has no plans to stop nuclear tests as long as perceived threats from the USA continue. "We have reprocessed used nuclear fuel rods removed from a graphite-moderated reactor," the Atomic Energy Institute, which holds jurisdiction over North Korea's main nuclear facilities at the Yongbyon complex, said in a written interview with Kyodo News. In its first-ever response to foreign media questions, the institute also said North Korea has been producing highly enriched uranium necessary for nuclear arms and power "as scheduled”.
