US utility Commonwealth Edison (ComEd – part of Exelon) and Constellation have announced an agreement that will help ComEd power all of its 54 offices and metered facilities with locally produced carbon-free nuclear energy, every hour of every day. This will make ComEd the first US investor-owned utility to power its facilities with 100% clean energy produced at the same time and place it is consumed. The ComEd agreement follows a similar one between Constellation and Microsoft in July to power one of its Virginia data centres.

The hourly carbon-free energy matching agreement will see ComEd power all its offices and metered facilities with locally produced nuclear energy, in a 'first' for an investor-owned US utility. Constellation earlier this year signed a similar hourly energy matching agreement to power a Microsoft data centre.

Constellation is collaborating with Microsoft on the development of an energy matching technology to match a customer's power needs with local carbon-free energy sources. The real-time, data-driven carbon accounting solution will use hour-by-hour regional tracking giving customers clearer and more accurate data on their emissions impact and help to achieve zero-carbon goals, the company said.

The new company, based in Baltimore, Maryland, began trading this week on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol “CEG.”
Exelon announced last February that it had begun work to separate its utility businesses from its competitive power generation and customer-facing energy businesses.
In a press release announcing the separation, Constellation said it is exploring growth opportunities that build on its core businesses and capitalise on the expanding demand for carbon-free energy, including potential acquisition of nuclear plants or other clean energy assets, creating clean hydrogen using its nuclear fleet, and introducing new products and services for business customers.

The two companies that will emerge from the approaching separation of Exelon Generation's regulated utility and competitive energy businesses have set out their respective plans at separate analyst events this week. Exelon will become the USA's largest transmission and distribution (T&D) utility serving some 10 million customers across seven different regulatory jurisdictions. Constellation will be the largest producer of carbon-free electricity in the country.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has approved Exelon Generation Company’s application for an additional 20 years of operation for the Peach Bottom-2 and -3 nuclear power units in Pennsylvania.
The renewed licences authorise reactor operation from 60 to 80 years.
The NRC approved initial licence renewals of 20 years for both units in May 2003, with Unit 2 licensed to operate until 8 August 2033 and Unit 3 until 2 July 2034. Those dates have now been extended by 20 years. The new Peach Bottom-2 subsequent licence expires on 8 August 2053 and the Peach Bottom-3 licence on 2 July, 2054.
Both units are 1,308-MW boiling water reactors. Peach Bottom-2 began commercial operation in July 1974 and Peach Bottom-3 in December 1974.
