The US Administration, through the Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the signing of the credit award and payment agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) to finalise terms for $1.1bn in credit payments through the Civil Nuclear Credit (CNC) programme for the Diablo Canyon NPP in California. The $6bn CNC programme is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and administered by DOE’s Grid Deployment Office. It supports the continued operations of nuclear energy facilities, preserving thousands of jobs while avoiding an increase in carbon emissions.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has agreed to allow the Diablo Canyon NPP to operate for an additional five years, despite calls from environmental groups for its closure. The CPUC voted to extend the shutdown date to 2030 instead of closing it in 2025 as previously agreed. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) still needs to conduct a safety review.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved an exemption request from Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) to allow continued operation of the Diablo Canyon NPP beyond its current licences. This will allow PG&E to continue operating both units at Diablo Canyon while the company's Licence Renewal Application (LRA) is under review. PG&E intends to submit a new LRA by the end of 2023. The current licences for units 1&2 expire in 2024 and 2025.

The 73rd and final multi-purpose canister (MPC) of used nuclear fuel from Southern California Edison’s (SCE’s) twin unit San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) in the USA has been placed in its designated below-grade storage vault., US-based Holtec International said on 7 August.

The California Coastal Commission has approved a coastal development permit for Southern California Edison's San Onofre nuclear power plant, enabling decommissioning of the plant to begin. The utility said it expects the dismantling of major structures at the two-unit plant to begin next year.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced on 24 August that it will conduct a special inspection at the site of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (Songs), after a near-accident occurred on 3 August during the transfer of highly radioactive used fuel. NRC inspectors will review what happened when a canister loaded with used fuel became jammed while being lowered into a storage vault. It narrowly avoided being dropped 18 feet. The incident was revealed during a community engagement panel by safety inspector David Fitch. Tom Palmisano, chief nuclear officer of Southern California Edison (SCE), described the event as “a serious near miss.”

Los Angeles-based engineering and construction firm AECOM and Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions announced on 20 December they had been selected by Southern California Edison (SCE) as general contractor in the decommissioning of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), through their joint venture, SONGS Decommissioning Solutions (SDS). SCE, which owns the majority stake in the plant shares responsibility for decommissioning with San Onofre co-owners San Diego Gas & Electric and the city of Riverside, and former co-owner the city of Anaheim. The contract is estimated at $4.4bn.

Four new nuclear reactors were connected to the grid in 2013 and four were permanently shut down, bringing the total number of reactors in operation around the world to 437, with an installed capacity of 373 GW (net). Construction began on ten units, bringing the number of reactors under construction to 72.
