California facility heralds first successful instance of ignition The team of scientists achieved a yield of more than 1.3 megajoules in a groundbreaking physics achievement. Courtesy NIF. Scientists have confirmed a major breakthrough in nuclear fusion involving the first successful instance of ignition, the point at which a nuclear fusion reaction becomes self-sustaining.

Analysis has confirmed that an experiment conducted in 2021 created a fusion reaction energetic enough to be self-sustaining, which brings fusion one step closer to being useful as a source of energy.

The fusion ignition took place on 8 August 2021 at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s National Ignition Facility (NIF) in California, but NIF researchers have not been able to reproduce this landmark achievement since. They have spent the past year analysing the experimental conditions that led to their success 12 months ago.

Fusion ignition occurs when the energy being given off by the fusion reactions heats the fuel mass more rapidly than various loss mechanisms cool it. At this point, the external energy needed to heat the fuel to fusion temperatures is no longer needed.

The Volgodonsk branch of Russia’s AEM-technology Atommash (part of Rosatom’s mechanical engineering division Atomenergomash) said on 6 August that it had manufactured a set of elbows for the main circulation pipeline (MCP) for units 7 and 8 of China’s Tianwan NPP and units 3 and 4 of the Xudabao NPP. The work was carried out in two stages at the thermal press section of Atommash. At first, the specialists performed ovalisation - the blanks with the help of a press were given the necessary oval shape. At the second stage, the bending of the products took place. After two-stage holding in an oven at a temperature of 870 to 1080 degrees, the elbows were placed in a specialised stamp. Under pressure from a press with a force of 6,000 ton-forces, the workpieces were bent at 29 degrees. The mass of the finished product is 2 tons, the diameter is 1050mm. In total, specialists manufactured 16 MCP components for the two NPPs in China.

The Petrozavodsk branch of AEM-Technologies JSC (part of Rosatom’s mechanical engineering division Atomenergomash) said on 8 July it had carried out cargo tests of two casings for the main circulation pumping units (MCPU) for unit 2 of the Akkuyu NPP being built in Turkey. The purpose of the cargo tests is to control the strength of the welded seams between the trunnions and the reactor coolant pipeline (RCP) body.

The UK government announced this week its invitation to local communities to put forward proposals to host the country's prototype fusion energy power plant. The successful site will be home to the construction of STEP - the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production - that is targeted for completion by 2040. At a media briefing ahead of the government's announcement, Professor Ian Chapman, CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, explained why this is an exciting prospect for the whole world.
