Russia’s State Duma recently held a "government hour" with the participation of Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, during which he discussed conditions at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). He emphasised that physical protection of the station has been restored. “It was destroyed during the withdrawal of the Ukrainian forces,” he said. “A special protective canopy has been created over the used nuclear fuel storage facility, which caused great concern as there were attacks on this site.”

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has held a series of talks in the southern Russian city of Sochi with President Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials including Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev. This Grossi’s second meeting with Putin Russia took control of ZNPP in March 2022 as part of its special military operation in Ukraine. In October 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree formally transferring ZNPP to Russian jurisdiction under nuclear utility Rosenergoatom (part of Rosatom) – a few days before Grossi’s first meeting with Putin in St Petersburg. A Russian Federal State Unitary Enterprise, Zaporizhia NPP, has since been established by nuclear utility Rosenergoatom to operate the plant, which is now being transferred to Russian operating and safety standards.

The Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) lost the connection to its main off-site power line, forcing it to rely on back-up electricity for reactor cooling International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in his latest update. IAEA experts present at the ZNPP heard several rockets that appeared to have been fired from close to the plant. The IAEA team did not see the projectiles because of clouds but the distinctive sound indicated they were fired from a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) nearby.

Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) is transitioning its reactor unit 5 to cold from hot shutdown in order to determine the cause of boron detected in a cooling circuit. This still leaves one of the plant’s six reactors in hot shutdown to produce necessary steam and heating, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reported. Unit 4 will remain in hot shutdown. There are currently no plans to bring a second unit into hot shutdown to replace unit 5, the plant said.
