International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi says IAEA experts present at Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) have in recent days and weeks inspected parts of the facility – including some sections of the perimeter of the large cooling pond – and have also conducted regular walkdowns across the site, so far without observing any visible indications of mines or explosives.

Following his visit to the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi visited Russia’s Kaliningrad for talks with Rosatom officials. Rosatom’s oppress service said that Grossi and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev discussed safety measures at the plant.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi’s planned visit to the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) is facing delays. Grossi is leading the rotation of mission inspectors to the plant. He tweeted on 13 June: “On my way to Ukraine to meet President Zelenskyy & present a programme of assistance in the aftermath of the catastrophic Nova Kakhovka dam flooding. I will assess the situation at Zaporizhia nuclear power plant & conduct a rotation of ISAMZ with a strengthened team.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it will provide vital assistance to Ukraine in coping with the devastating consequences of the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam. The breach of the dam caused a rapid drop in the water levels of the Kakhovka reservoir further complicating an already precarious nuclear safety and security situation at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said this added to the importance of his already planned mission to the plant.

On 19 October [2022] Russia’s Defence Ministry said the Russian army had destroyed a Ukrainian landing force at Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP), adding that Kiev had lost more than 90 military personnel and 14 boats. "Today [10 April], at about 4 am, Ukrainian forces of up to two companies made another attempt to land troops on the left bank of the Kakhovsky reservoir and seize the territory of the nuclear power plant," the MOD report said. The ministry noted that the Russian forces guarding the outer perimeter of the plant had destroyed the attacking troops. Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main (pro Russian) Council of the Zaporozhye region administration said the battle lasted more than three hours. In addition, Ukrainian Armed Forces had fired US-supplied Himars multiple launch rockets at the operators’ city of Energodar leaving it without electricity.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, currently on a visit to Ukraine, said on his Twitter page that he had met with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and discussed the safety of the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). He said he had met President Volodymyr Zelensky in Zaporizhia City and “had a rich exchange on the protection of the Zaporizhia NPP and its staff. I reiterated the full support of the IAEA to Ukraine’s nuclear facilities”.
