Russia’s State Duma recently held a "government hour" with the participation of Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, during which he discussed conditions at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). He emphasised that physical protection of the station has been restored. “It was destroyed during the withdrawal of the Ukrainian forces,” he said. “A special protective canopy has been created over the used nuclear fuel storage facility, which caused great concern as there were attacks on this site.”

The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its latest report, Electricity 2024, dedicates a significant amount of space to nuclear power – a departure from its previous studies which treated it as peripheral. In its press release on the new report, IEA says the increase in electricity generation from renewables and nuclear "appears to be pushing the power sector's emissions into structural decline". Over the next three years, low-emissions generation is set to rise at twice the annual growth rate between 2018 and 2023. Global emissions from electricity generation are expected to decrease by 2.4% in 2024, followed by smaller declines in 2025 and 2026.

The 67th annual IAEA General Conference has adopted resolutions related to nuclear and radiation safety, nuclear security, and strengthening the effectiveness and improving the efficiency of Agency safeguards. Strengthening the IAEA’s technical cooperation activities, as well as activities related to nuclear science, technology and applications were also adopted, among other resolutions. IAEA resolutions and decisions will guide the IAEA’s implementation of activities in the coming year.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Emergency Preparedness Review (EPREV) team has concluded a ten-day mission to review the emergency preparedness and response (EPR) framework for nuclear and radiological emergencies in the Kingdom of Morocco. The was carried out at the request of the Moroccan Government and hosted by the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR).

A maintenance and refuelling outage is under way at the Krško Nuclear Power Plant in Slovenia, operating company NEK has announced. All overhaul works, involving some 45,000 activities, is expected to last a month, are managed and supervised by NEK employees in cooperation with external contractors from Slovenia and Croatia and contractors of specific works in the nuclear industry from the international environment, NEK said. More than 2,100 people enter the plant every day and more than 1,500 people work there during peak hours.

An Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has concluded a 13-day mission to Argentina. The IRRS team reviewed all regulatory functions and responsibilities of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ARN) against international safety standards and concluded that the regulator had demonstrated a long-standing commitment to enhancing and promoting nuclear safety. The team also recommended areas where improvements can be made. The mission was conducted at the request of the Government of Argentina and hosted by ARN.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will provide Uzbekistan with a grant of €7 million ($6.95m) to support work on the reclamation of uranium legacy sites at Charkesar and Yangiabad, the press service of State Committee of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection (SCUEEP) and EBRD have reported. The agreement for the grant project was signed on 1 September in London by SCUEEP Chairman Narzullo Oblomuradov and Balthazar Lindauer, Director of the EBRD Nuclear Safety Department.
