International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts at Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) have not yet been given access to the reactor halls of units 1, 2 & 6, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in his latest update. He noted that this is hindering their ability to monitor the nuclear safety and security situation at the plant.

The Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) lost the connection to its main off-site power line, forcing it to rely on back-up electricity for reactor cooling International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in his latest update. IAEA experts present at the ZNPP heard several rockets that appeared to have been fired from close to the plant. The IAEA team did not see the projectiles because of clouds but the distinctive sound indicated they were fired from a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) nearby.

Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) is transitioning its reactor unit 5 to cold from hot shutdown in order to determine the cause of boron detected in a cooling circuit. This still leaves one of the plant’s six reactors in hot shutdown to produce necessary steam and heating, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi reported. Unit 4 will remain in hot shutdown. There are currently no plans to bring a second unit into hot shutdown to replace unit 5, the plant said.

Unit 6 at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) temporarily lost power recently, forcing it to rely on an emergency diesel generator for the electricity needed for cooling and other vital functions, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has reported.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts have been informed that 21 natural gas boilers have been installed at the industrial zone nearby the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) as part of measures to provide additional heating during the winter, including for the nearby city of Energodar, according to IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

A new team of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts has crossed the frontline to replace their colleagues in monitoring nuclear safety and security at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). This is the thirteenth such mission since the IAEA established its Support & Assistance Mission to Zaporizhia (ISAMZ) at the site in September 2022 to help prevent a nuclear accident during the military conflict, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said. IAEA noted that, when the rotation of IAEA experts took place, there were Russian reports of drone attacks in the town of Energodar, where many plant staff live.

In his latest update, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said that the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) is transitioning a second reactor to hot shutdown to provide warm water and district heating. Since April, it has kept five reactors in cold shutdown and just one, currently unit 4, in hot shutdown to generate steam to process liquid radioactive waste and to heat water for Energodar, where most plant staff live. Ahead of the upcoming winter season, it has begun transferring unit 5 to hot shutdown after carrying out safety maintenance and testing at this unit.

Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) is once again using reactor unit 4 to generate steam for various safety functions at the facility after the repair of a water leak detected in mid-August, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in his latest update. After completing the transition of unit 4 to hot from cold shutdown, ZNPP placed reactor unit 6 – which had temporarily been producing such steam during the repair work – in cold shutdown.
