The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has recently published a 73-page study, which tracks the progress of selected small modular reactor (SMR) designs towards deployment. NEA says the SMR designs are at various stages of development, from fundamental research on new concepts to commercial deployment and operation of mature designs.

Countries around the world turned to nuclear as a reliable low-carbon energy source as they looked for ways to wean themselves off Russian imports and lower carbon emissions.

On the political front, US president Joe Biden signed into law new legislation that will help to finance struggling nuclear reactors and could save dozens from being shut down early. In Europe, the nuclear industry celebrated when members of the European parliament decided to “follow the science” and support legislation which includes nuclear in the bloc’s sustainable finance taxonomy for green investment.

China is building a massive underground laboratory to research disposal technologies for high-level radioactive waste, China Daily reported on 8 April. This will pave the way for a repository that can handle the disposal of at least a century's worth of such materials for tens of thousands of years, the lab's chief designer, Wang Ju, vice-president of the Beijing Research Institute of Uranium Geology, told China Daily. The lab will be situated in granite up to 560 metres below ground in the Beishan region of Gansu province. The underground lab was listed as one of China's major scientific construction projects in the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20).

A group of more than 100 scientists and environmentalists have written to the European Commission calling for a "timely and just assessment" of nuclear energy in the EU Taxonomy. The letter was sent by Satu Helynen, acting president of the Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform (SNETP), and addressed to EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson and to two European Commission vice-presidents, Valdis Dombrovskis and Frans Timmermans.

Further innovation and technological development will enable even wider applications aimed at deep decarbonisation of economies around the world and supporting sustainable development. Significant progress has been made in cleaning up some of the legacy waste from historic uranium mining in Central Asia, but much remains to be done, with additional donations from the international community needed to complete this vital remediation work, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) says.

Following an 11-day mission to South Africa, an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) team said on 15 December that South Africa has a robust regulatory framework for nuclear safety but recommended improvements in the oversight of radiation safety.
