The six-units Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, the largest in Europe, was taken by Russian troops after an armed assault on 4 March 2022 and has since remained occupied but operational in a reduced state.
The IAEA is aware of recent reports in the media and elsewhere warning of a deteriorating situation for Ukrainian staff at Zaporizhzhia, Mr Grossi said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last week concluded a mission to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine and the surrounding Exclusion Zone after carrying out planned nuclear safety, security and safeguards activities there. Ukraine told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 19 May that new wildfires in the area near the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) did not pose a radioactive threat to people, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said. Ukraine said the gamma dose rate levels in the vicinity of the Chernobyl NPP were “not exceeding the reference levels”.
