Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan visited the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee to discuss the agency’s report on its activities for 2023. Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, during a five-day visit to Russia, signed agreements with Russia for additional units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The agreement was signed following a meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of Industry & Trade Denis Manturov.

Among the options for a new NPP in Armenia, the project for a Russian unit of 1,000-1,200 MWe is the best developed, according to Karen Sargsyan, Advisor at the Ministry of Territorial Administration & Infrastructure (MTAI). He was speaking at a panel discussion on the prospects for nuclear energy in Armenia organised by Rosatom and the Ministry. Sargsyan recalled that at the beginning of this year, a pre-feasibility study (preliminary feasibility study) was prepared for Armenia for the construction of a plant with a VVER-1200 reactor. Armenia and Russia signed an interstate agreement to build a 1,000-1,200 MWe plant and in May, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev held talks in Yerevan on the possible construction of a new NPP.

The government of Armenia has approved signing a nuclear safety co-operation agreement with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Under the agreement with the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee of Armenia, NRC will support Armenia to strengthen its regulatory body and to develop the skills and abilities of the Armenian NPP personnel. This includes the licensing stages for construction of a new NPP, as well as analysis and assessment of safety.

The Armenian NPP in Metsamor is preparing to build a new storage facility for low- and medium-level solid waste. The director of the station, Movses Vardanyan, said on 31 May. Before the end of the year, the plant intends to select contractors (from specialist companies) and conclude a construction contract.
