Russia’s annual International Forum on Nuclear Energy, Atomexpo, which was recently held over two days in Sochi on the Black Sea coast set a record for the number of participating countries. Atomexpo-2024 organised by Rosatom, was held at the Sirius science & arts park in Sochi. The Sirius Federal Territory was established in 2020 has a special status and management system with an experimental legal regime. The forum attracted more than 4,500 people from 75 countries.

In his latest update on the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said the plant has regained access to its only remaining back-up power line, following an outage of more than three weeks “that once again underlined persistent nuclear safety and security risks facing the site”.

Russia’s State Duma recently held a "government hour" with the participation of Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, during which he discussed conditions at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). He emphasised that physical protection of the station has been restored. “It was destroyed during the withdrawal of the Ukrainian forces,” he said. “A special protective canopy has been created over the used nuclear fuel storage facility, which caused great concern as there were attacks on this site.”

The board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency passed a resolution calling for the immediate return of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to Ukrainian control - however Russia says the vote "went beyond the mandate of the board and the entire agency".

IAEA experts stationed at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) site have continued to hear explosions and other indications of military activity not far away from the facility. Three times recently, they reported hearing several successive explosions within a few minutes, as well as one explosion and multiple explosions possibly indicating the use of heavy weapons from an area close to the plant.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has held a series of talks in the southern Russian city of Sochi with President Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials including Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev. This Grossi’s second meeting with Putin Russia took control of ZNPP in March 2022 as part of its special military operation in Ukraine. In October 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree formally transferring ZNPP to Russian jurisdiction under nuclear utility Rosenergoatom (part of Rosatom) – a few days before Grossi’s first meeting with Putin in St Petersburg. A Russian Federal State Unitary Enterprise, Zaporizhia NPP, has since been established by nuclear utility Rosenergoatom to operate the plant, which is now being transferred to Russian operating and safety standards.
