The reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for unit 3 at the Xudabao nuclear power plant in China's Liaoning province has successfully completed hydrostatic testing in Russia. The two VVER-1200 reactors that form phase two of the plant - units 3 and 4 - are scheduled to be commissioned in 2027-2028.

The first safety-related concrete has been poured for the nuclear island of unit 1 of the El Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt. It marks the official start of construction of the first of four Russian-supplied VVER-1200 reactors at the site on the country's Mediterranean coast.

The global uranium market has not yet been impacted by recent geopolitical events, speakers from uranium suppliers said during a session of the World Nuclear Fuel Conference 2022 in London. However, they agreed that the longer-term future is uncertain but the industry can bring capacity online to avoid any shortages.

A high-ranking Egyptian delegation headed by the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt, Mohammed Shaker, paid a working visit to one of the largest machine-building enterprises in Russia, JSC Tyazhmash on 30 July. The delegation also included: the Chairman of the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) Amged El-Wakil; NPPA Vice President Mohammed Ramadan; the Chairman of the Nuclear and Radiation Control Department of Egypt, Sami Atalla; Rosatom’s First Deputy General Director for Nuclear Energy and President of JSC ASE, Alexander Lokshin; the Deputy Head of the Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision, Alexey Ferapontov, Samara Region Governor Dmitry Azarov; the General Director of Tyazhmash JSC Andrey Trifonov, as well as project teams of the Rosatom engineering division and NPPA.

According to local press reports, the delay of the El-Dabaa NPP to 2030 instead of 2028 reported earlier in July is due to underlying tension in relations with Russia. Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority spokesman Karim al-Adham confirmed the delay statements to the Egyptian economic newspaper Enterprise on 14 July, citing the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic as the reason.

Bulgaria’s nuclear society, Bulatom, on 14 June published its position on the main projects in the electricity industry of Bulgaria, in particular the Belene NPP project. In an earlier letter, addressed to “colleagues”, Bulatom noted: “Currently, there is an intensive debate in the society about the future of nuclear energy in our country, including the two promising projects that are in the process of structuring and selecting options for implementation: the project for construction of nuclear power on the approved new site near Kozloduy; and the project for construction of nuclear power at the Belene site.”

First concrete was poured for the third unit of Turkey’s Akkuyu NPP on 11 March. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Erdogan both took part in the ceremony by videoconference. The even at the construction site was attended by Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez, the General Director of Russia’s Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, and the General Director project company Akkuyu Nuclear, Anastasia Zoteeva.

Rosatom’s publication, Strana Roastom, said on 9 March that by 2045, the share of nuclear energy in Russia’s energy balance should reach 25%. “We understand that the coronavirus epidemic has changed the world, but it's hard to say what the outcome will be. It is only obvious that the speed of change is increasing, and we need to accept this,” said Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev.

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said a “solemn ceremony” was also held at the site of the nuclear station and attended by Turkish energy and natural resources minister Fatih Dienmez, Rosatom director-general Aleksey Likhachev and Akkuyu Nuclear chief executive officer Anastasia Soteeva.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the facility would launch Turkey into the “league of nuclear energy countries” and called it a “symbol of Turkish-Russian cooperation.” Nuclear power is a “strategic step” for energy security, Mr Erdogan said.

The European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (Ensreg) has approved the preliminary report on a peer review of the new Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets. Adopted by consensus on 3 March, the report follows a mission by Ensreg technical experts to the plant site on 9 and 10 February.
