Saudi Arabian Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz Bin Salman says Saudi Arabia plans to use domestically-sourced uranium to develop its nuclear power industry. “We have large quantities of uranium, and we will exploit them commercially in the best way... We will deal with uranium reserves with full transparency, and we will search for the appropriate partners,” he noted.

Saudi Arabia has begun the process to issue a licence to build a first commercial nuclear power station, the Middle East kingdom’s energy minister Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud said.

Al Saud said in a speech at the International Atomic Energy Agency conference in Vienna, said that “the site will be finalised after completion of the technical specifications documents, which were drafted through an international competition”.

In June, Saudi Arabia began the process of choosing a vendor for the construction of the oil-rich kingdom’s first commercial nuclear power station with bids likely to come from South Korea, France, China and Russia.

According to Dan Yurman, who writes the Neutron Bytes blog, Riyadh wants to build two 1,400 MW nuclear power plants, a down-sized effort from an ambitious goal set in 2014 to build 16 units of about 1,000 MW each.

Saudi Arabia aims to take advantage of its significant uranium resources to develop a commercial nuclear power programme, energy minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud said.

“We have a huge amount of uranium resource, which we would like to exploit and put in the most transparent way,” he was quoted as telling the International Mining Conference in Riyadh.

“We will bring partners and we will be exporting and manufacturing and developing it and we will be commercially monetising that resource.”

The minister said the world needed more flexibility because the transition to clean energy is complicated. “We should not forfeit energy security for the sake of a publicity stunt”, he said. “The transition needs to be a well-thought of transition.”

Press reports have said Saudi Arabia, the world’s top il exporter, could produce over 90,000 tonnes of uranium from three major deposits in the country, enough to provide fuel for nuclear plants the country seeks to build and to export uranium.
