China's new-generation tokamak, Huanliu-3 (HL-3), has made significant progress operating in high-confinement mode (H mode) under a plasma current of 1 million amperes for the first time, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced. The experiment took place at CNNC’s Southwestern Institute of Physics (SWIP) in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. It is not clear whether this refers to the HL-2M tokamak, which was commissioned at SWIP in December 2020 as an upgrade of the earlier the HL-2A or whether this is a further upgrade.

Russia’s DV Efremov Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus (NIIEFA, part of Rosatom) says a Japanese test assembly has completed testing for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), under construction in France. Eight elements of a prototype divertor, passed 6,000 test cycles at loads from 5 to 20 MW per square metre, confirming "the compliance of the Japanese element with the highest requirements" of ITER. The tests were carried out at the ITER Divertor Test Facility (IDTF) in St Petersburg, which supports tasks for the ITER project.

US fusion energy tech startup Helion Energy has signed an agreement to provide Microsoft with electricity from its first fusion power plant. Constellation will serve as the power marketer and will manage transmission for the project. Helion said the plant is expected to be online by 2028 and will target power generation of 50 MW or more after a one-year ramp up period. The companies did not disclose financial or timing details of the power purchase agreement, or which Microsoft facilities would get fusion-generated electricity.

Researchers at Russia’s NRNU MEPhI (National Research University - Moscow Power Engineering Institute) are investigating the accumulation of helium and deuterium in promising "smart" W-Cr-Y alloys for use in thermonuclear reactors. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Nuclear Materials. The interaction of plasma with the inner wall of a fusion reactor are a major obstacle to achieving fusion energy, explained Zori Arutyunyan, Candidate of Physical & Mathematical Sciences, and Junior Researcher at MEPhI’s Department of Plasma Physics.
