Netherlands-based AMG Critical Materials has established a new company, NewMOX SAS in Grenoble, France, to service the nuclear fuel market. NewMOX is a subsidiary of ALD Vacuum Technologies based in Hanau, Germany. ALD is AMG’s engineering subsidiary focused on vacuum furnace technology, which includes sintering furnace systems enabling the production of commercial nuclear fuel from plutonium and depleted uranium mixed oxides (mox). ALD’s MOX technology has been applied in Germany, the USA, France, Belgium, the UK and recently ALD has been delivering furnace systems to China. ALD inherited the mox technology from Degussa AG, ALD’s former owner (later renamed Evonik AG).

Addressing the recent International Forum Atomexpo 2024 in Sochi, southern Russia, Rosatom’s Deputy General Director for Engineering & Industrial Solutions, Andrei Nikipelov, noted the growing global interest in nuclear energy and in particular to low power NPPs (ASMM - Atomnoi Stantsii Maloi Moshnosti). Noting that there were more than 70 different ASMM projects worldwide, he said those in Russia and China were the furthest advanced in terms of implementation.

In early April, the first shipment of equipment in 2024 for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), which is being built in France, will take place from Russia’s DV Efremov Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus (NIIEFA, part of Rosatom). The equipment was developed and manufactured at NIIEFA in St Petersburg by order of Rosatom, within the framework of the International ITER project.

At unit 8 of China’s Tianwan NPP Rosatom has the lower part of the dome of the internal containment (VZO - Vnutrennei Zatsitnoi Obolochki). The large metal structures were assembled on the ground at a separate stand. The total weight of the structure was 375.5 tonnes. The hermetic shell of the reactor building will now be installed and concreted, and installation of the main equipment – reactor vessel, steam generators, the main circulation pipeline will begin, according to Alexey Bannik Vice President for projects in China at Atomstroyexport (general contractor and part of Rosatom).
