Work has begun to mine a new panel at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico, according to DOE’s Office of Environmental Management (EM). It’s the first time in a decade that mining has been undertaken on a new disposal panel at the only US deep geologic waste repository for defence-related transuranic waste.

A new large-scale ventilation system, also known as the Safety Significant Confinement Ventilation System (SSCVS) is being commissioned at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). When completed and online, the SSCVS facility will significantly increase airflow to the WIPP underground areas. WIPP is the only US deep geological salt repository for defence-related transuranic (TRU) waste. Workers have begun testing the first set of electrical cables that will supply power to SSCVS mechanical equipment, such as motors, fans and massive air filtration units.

NorthStar Group Services has removed the Vallecitos boiling water reactor (VBWR) from the GEH Vallecitos Nuclear Centre in California and has delivered it for disposal to the Texas facility of its affiliate, Waste Control Specialists (WCS). The privately owned VBWR operated from 1957 to 1963 at the Vallecitos Nuclear Centre (VNC) in Alameda County some 48 km east of San Francisco. The VBWR was the first NPP to deliver significant quantities of electricity to a public utility grid and the first NPP to receive an operating licence issued by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

The US Department of Energy (DOE) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico recently achieved a milestone as its largest safety-related ventilation system reached its final depth of 2,275 feet. The new air intake shaft, 26 feet in diameter, supports the Safety Significant Confinement Ventilation System (SSCVS), which will increase underground airflow from 170,000 cubic feet per minute (cfm) to 540,000 cfm.
