During the World Nuclear Exhibition (WNE) 2023 in Paris, EDF Group signed several industrial cooperation agreements intended to secure the involvement of local supply chains and industries for the deployment of future EPR-technology-based and Nuward small modular reactor (SMR) projects in Europe and worldwide. These included agreements with Canada’s Ontario Power Group (OPG), various Czech companies and India’s Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

The Czech government has approved the “Czech SMR Roadmap – Applicability & Contribution to Economy”, which was submitted by the Ministry of Industry & Trade. Based on the Roadmap, small modular reactor (SMR) technology will be included in the State Energy Policy and recognised in the Spatial Development Policy of the Czech Republic. The Roadmap provides an overview of possible sites and investment models.

Plans for small modular reactors (SMRs) in the Czech Republic are to be included in State Energy Policy and Spatial Development Policy of the Czech Republic after a minister-led working group examining their potential outlined numerous potential sites and called for the start of construction in the first half of the 2030s.

US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, at the Three Seas Initiative Summit in Bucharest, announced US actions “to further the role of new, secure, and safe nuclear technologies in accelerating the clean energy transition”. The US State Department said in a statement. “These actions expand on Romania’s leadership role in building the first small modular reactor (SMR) in Europe and in converting a former coal plant to advance nuclear energy”. The Three Seas Initiative, launched in 2016, includes Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria, Estonia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Latvia and Lithuania.
