Japan, the UK, Canada, the US and France have agreed to co-operate to reduce dependence on Russia as a supplier of nuclear materials and technology. Their statement was issued at the Nuclear Energy Forum being held in Japan’s Sapporo alongside the meeting of Group of Seven (G7) ministers on climate, energy and environment. Countries around the world turned to nuclear as a reliable low-carbon energy source as they looked for ways to wean themselves off Russian imports and lower carbon emissions.
New plants began operating, deals for small modular reactors were signed and countries announced ambitious plans for new-build.
On the political front, US president Joe Biden signed into law new legislation that will help to finance struggling nuclear reactors and could save dozens from being shut down early. In Europe, the nuclear industry celebrated when members of the European parliament decided to “follow the science” and support legislation which includes nuclear in the bloc’s sustainable finance taxonomy for green investment.

The leader of Australia's opposition has launched a formal process to examine the potential for advanced and next-generation nuclear technologies to contribute to national energy security and reduce power prices. Joyce’s party, the National Party of Australia (NPA), has been a strong advocate for nuclear, arguing the technological advancements make it a viable, clean and reliable energy source as opposed to solar and wind.
Joyce told Sky News Australia several governments around the world, including the UK and France, had been successfully integrating the power source and suggested Australia should be next.
“If you want to get to zero emissions then listen to what they’re doing in the UK where they’re building new nuclear reactors, listen to what they’re doing in France, listen to what they’re doing in Asia,” he told First Edition host Pete Stefanovic.
