All realistic options that might contribute to global net-zero must be considered, the Generation IV International Forum (GIF) has said in an open letter to COP26 President Alok Sharma. An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) team on 25 October concluded an 11-day mission to review the UK’s regulatory safety framework. The team said the UK is committed to strengthening its regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety and identified areas that would benefit from further enhancement. The UK has 15 operating nuclear power reactors at seven sites, generating 21% of its electricity, and two nuclear fuel reprocessing plants.

The Australian Workers Union (AWU) has told a federal government roundtable event that it supports the lifting of the country's ban on nuclear energy. The union is nation's oldest and largest 'blue-collar' trade union, having more than 100,000 members.

As a result of higher energy consumption, CO2 emissions rose 1.7% last year and hit a new record, according to the latest data from the International Energy Agency (IEA). The Paris-based agency’s Global Energy & CO2 Status Report, released today, shows that the global energy system emitted 33 billion tonnes of CO2 in 2018.

The amount of nuclear-generated electricity in the OECD area declined by 5.2% between 2011 and 2012, according to a book of nuclear energy data published by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency. Total electricity generation fell 0.1% over the same period.
