The UK government has outlined plans for the biggest expansion of nuclear power for 70 years to reduce electricity bills, support thousands of jobs and improve UK energy security. This includes exploring building a major new power station and investing in advanced nuclear fuel production, according to the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ).

If existing inventories of used nuclear fuel were recycled and repurposed as fuel for advanced fast reactors, it could generate zero-carbon electricity for Europe for up to 1000 years, according to international environmental campaign group RePlanet.

US nuclear energy company the Lightbridge Corporation said on 5 July it had received approval for a key patent covering its metallic nuclear fuel rod design from the European Patent Office.  Lightbridge said it will seek patent validation in key countries in the EU region, including France, the UK, Sweden, and others that already have a significant amount of nuclear generating capacity.

A UK firm has developed a new economic simulator to assess the cost of producing plutonium/uranium mixed oxide fuel (MOX). MOXSIM has been developed as a research tool to help governments, regulators, policy-makers, energy utilities and environmental organisations to explore the economic conditions necessary to make MOX nuclear fuel plants work more efficiently and cost-effectively.
