The Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for uranium enrichment services to help establish a reliable domestic supply of fuels using high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). Currently, HALEU is not commercially available from US-based suppliers, and boosting domestic supply is seen as vital for the development and deployment of advanced reactors in the US.

Russia and Ghana have agreed to establish a Joint Working Group (JWG) to coordinate and exchange information regarding Russian technological solutions for small modular reactors (SMRs) during a seminar on SMR technology held in Accra. The seminar, organised within the framework of nuclear energy cooperation between Russia and Ghana, was opened by Ryan Collier, Director General of Rosatom in Central and South Africa. He stressed the importance of the development of Ghanaian-Russian cooperation in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy, and the strategic partnership of the two countries.

Small reactors can supply reliable power in island countries, says Rosatom The Bataan nuclear power station, north of Manila, has never operated and has been mothballed. Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom and the Philippines Department of Energy have agreed on an action plan to explore the potential of deploying small modular reactors supplied by Russia in the southeast Asian nation.

Rosatom said the action plan involves a pre-feasibility study and follows a memorandum of intent signed between Moscow and Manila in 2019.

“SMR technologies offer an effective solution for the supply of stable, reliable and environmentally friendly power in island countries,” said Evgeny Pakermanov, president of Rusatom Overseas.

The Philippines is an archipelago nation of more than 7,000 islands, many without reliable access to electricity. Nuclear energy is seen by proponents as a potential answer to the Philippines’ twin problems of precarious supply and Southeast Asia’s highest electricity costs.

Nuclear energy, as an asset class, has the potential to report well against a wide range of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) data collection and accounting metrics, according to a new report from the Generation IV International Forum (GIF). This should allow nuclear energy to be considered as an investable asset class, thereby allowing nuclear companies and projects to access climate finance.
