The first rod with an additional cobalt absorber (SDPK) containing starting material for the production of cobalt-60 (Co-60) has been loaded into the RBMK reactor at unit 3 of Russia’s Kursk NPP. In total 27 SDPKs will be loaded and the neutron-physical characteristics of the reactor will be constantly monitored.

Russia’s Kursk II NPP has been chosen for a pilot project to trial the first stage of an automated control system for the cost and schedule of nuclear power plant construction (ACS SS).

The Kursk nuclear power plant in Russia has started producing cobalt-60, following the loading of additional cobalt absorbers into unit 4, Rosenergoatom has announced. Cobalt-60 is used to sterilise medical instruments and in cancer treatments.
