World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.

Representatives of the nuclear industry in OECD nations, and representatives of the governments of 20 countries, have issued communiqués committing to work together to expand nuclear energy capacity, after the inaugural Roadmaps to New Nuclear conference organised by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and the French government.

Energy ministers from 11 EU member states have called for a strengthening of European cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. The call came during an informal Council of Energy Ministers in Stockholm, Sweden, to discuss the energy market and energy supply, focusing on preparations for next winter and beyond.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) mission said Slovakia is committed to maintaining and strengthening its regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation safety, as the it prepares to start up a third reactor unit at the Mochovce NPP.  The team also noted areas where it could be further enhanced, for example by increasing coordination between different national authorities involved in regulatory oversight.

World Nuclear Association commends the recent publication of the Complementary Delegated Act that recognises the fundamental sustainability of nuclear energy and elevates it into the EU’s sustainable finance taxonomy. Now the Commission must demonstrate its commitment to a truly technology neutral framework and make sure that criteria are consistent and scientifically justified, says World Nuclear Association Director General Sama Bilbao y León.
