Landmark follows news of cost increase for twin-EPR nuclear station The 13-metre RPV, which weighs 500-tonnes, makes the final leg of its journey by road. Courtesy HPC. The reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for the first of two nuclear power plants under construction at Hinkley Point C in England has arrived onsite from France.

The 13-metre RPV, which weighs 500-tonnes, is the first of two RPVs which will be installed at Hinkley Point C.

Each France-supplied EPR at the new power station will help provide enough low-carbon electricity for 3-million homes and will be vital in helping Britain achieve net zero and stronger energy security.

The RPV, which contains the nuclear reactor coolant, core shroud, and the reactor core, was made by Framatome in France. It comes from the same factory which made the last nuclear reactor for a British power station at Sizewell B in Suffolk, which began commercial operation in 1995.

The reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for the first nuclear reactor built for a British power station in more than 30-years is complete and ready for delivery to Hinkley Point C in Somerset, southwest England.

The RPV is the high strength steel cylinder that contains the nuclear fuel and the chain reaction needed to make heat. The heat is used to create high pressure steam for the world’s largest turbines. EDF Energy said teams have spent 80,000 engineering hours on its construction.

At 13m long and weighing in at 500 tonnes, each of two RPVs at Hinkley Point C will help power around three million British homes. The plants are designed to run continuously for 18 months at a time between refuelling.

The RPV has been built by France by Framatome, the same nuclear engineering company which built Britain’s last nuclear reactor, at Sizewell B in 1991. Since it went into operation in 1995, that reactor has provided 247 TWh of electricity, enough to power every home in Britain for two-and-a-half years.

Unit 1 at China’s Taishan NPP in Guangdong province - the world's first operating EPR reactor – has been reconnected to the grid, China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) said in a stock exchange filing on 16 August. Operators reconnected the damaged reactor after months of “inspection and maintenance”, CGN said. “The monitoring results of Taishan Nuclear Power Plant and its surrounding environment are normal.”
