Nucleoeléctrica Argentina SA (NA-SA) will complete the construction of the prototype CAREM-25 reactor under a contract signed with the country's National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA). The contract specifies construction of the small modular reactor will be completed within three years. Work on the small pressurised water reactor began at a site adjacent to the Atucha nuclear power plant in Buenos Aires Province in early 2014, but has been suspended several times.

Argentina's nuclear regulator has extended the operating licence of the Atucha 1 nuclear power reactor. The licence extension allows the 44-year-old 362 MWe (gross) pressurised heavy water reactor - the first nuclear power plant in Latin America - to operate until 2024.

Russia and Argentina have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on uranium exploration and mining in the South American country. Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom is also proposing to supply Argentina with a nuclear power plant.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri signed cooperation agreements with China worth $15bn on 17 May including a $12.5bn agreement for the construction and financing of two nuclear power reactors (Argentina’s fourth and fifth). The agreements were signed in Beijing during Macri's state visit to China, where he participated earlier in an international meeting on the Belt and Road global infrastructure initiative promoted by the Chinese government.

Canada’s SNC-Lavalin announced on 24 November that it has been awarded a contract from Argentina's Nucleoelectrica Argentina SA (NA-SA) for the Candu nuclear new build project at the Atucha NPP in the district of Zarate, about 100 kilometres from Buenos Aires. If the project is realised, it will be the first new Candu built since unit 2 at Romania’s Cernavoda NPP came on line in 2007.

Argentina's nuclear regulator Autoridad Regulatoria Nuclear (ARN) has issued a licence to Nucleoeléctrica Argentina SA (NASA) for the commercial operation of unit 2 at the Atucha NPP (also known as the President Néstor Kirchner NPP). The 745MWe pressurized heavy water reactor, located in the city of Lima, Zárate, 115km from Buenos Aires, has been operating on a conditional licence since December 2015. ARN at that time set a deadline of 29 May 2016 for the operator to meet all the conditions for a full licence. After a programme of testing, training and other required actions was completed, ARN granted a full operating licence on 26 May.
