The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has amended the nuclear research and test establishment operating licence held by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) for Chalk River Laboratories (CRL). The 169-page amendment authorises the construction of a near surface disposal facility (NSDF) on the CRL site, in Deep River, Ontario, and on the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg peoples.

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), and the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation (AOPFN) have signed a long-term relationship agreement to formalise relations between two of Canada’s leading nuclear organizations and the Renfrew County-based First Nation. The agreement will establish a working group to pursue ongoing collaboration, and create a Neya Wabun (Guardian) program to establish a regular AOPFN monitoring presence at designated AECL sites, among other environmental, cultural and economic protection and promotion activities and programs.

Canada’s Global First Power Ltd (GFP) announced on 19 May that its Micro Modular Reactor(™) (MMR(™)) Project was moving to the next phase of licensing with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The announcement moves GFP closer to owning, constructing, and operating Canada’s first small modular reactor (SMR) with first power slated for 2026. The CNSC website provided details on GFP's Licence to Prepare Site, indicating that the Project had fulfilled requirements to move to the formal phase in this process, which will involve a detailed technical review.

Regulators must explore the possibility of harmonising international requirements for advanced and small modular reactor design evaluation and licensing, Rumina Velshi, president and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), told delegates at the Advanced Reactors Summit VII held in Knoxville, Tennessee yesterday. In August last year, Velshi and US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Chairman Christine Svinicki signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to expand the agencies' cooperation on activities associated with advanced reactor and SMR technologies.
