US DTE Energy has shutdown unit 2 of the Fermi NPP in Michigan as a precautionary measure after a coolant leak was identified during a routine inspection. Fermi 2 is a 1,198 MWe General Electric boiling water reactor that started operating in 1985. DTE said the issue was promptly addressed by the facility’s maintenance team and that the situation is under control, with no harmful emissions released into the environment.

Researchers at Russia’s NRNU MEPhI (National Research University - Moscow Power Engineering Institute) are investigating the accumulation of helium and deuterium in promising "smart" W-Cr-Y alloys for use in thermonuclear reactors. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Nuclear Materials. The interaction of plasma with the inner wall of a fusion reactor are a major obstacle to achieving fusion energy, explained Zori Arutyunyan, Candidate of Physical & Mathematical Sciences, and Junior Researcher at MEPhI’s Department of Plasma Physics.

Rosatom fuel company TVEL and the Troitsk Institute of Innovative & Thermonuclear Research (TRINITI) have developed a technology to decontaminate radiation-contaminated metal equipment using ozone baths. TVEL says it is much more efficient than foreign counterparts, and makes it possible to significantly reduce time needed to treat secondary liquid radwaste.

Constellation said it had begun producing hydrogen at Nine Mile Point, which has two boiling water reactor units, using 1.25 MW of energy per hour to produce 560 kg of clean hydrogen a day.
This is “more than enough to meet the plant’s operational hydrogen use,” Constellation said in a press release.
“It will also help set the stage for possible large-scale deployments at other clean energy centres in Constellation’s fleet that would couple clean hydrogen production with storage and other on-site uses,” it said.
Three other nuclear-powered hydrogen demonstration projects are underway.

The USA's first-of-its-kind 1 MW demonstration scale, nuclear-powered clean hydrogen production facility has begun operating at Constellation's Nine Mile Point nuclear power plant in Oswego, New York. The company said the new facility will help demonstrate the potential for hydrogen to power a clean economy.

A new Russian designed electrolysis unit has produced its first hydrogen at the Kola NPP. Hydrogen is used for cooling the turbogenerators that generate electricity at the plant. Previously this was produced by old-type alkaline electrolysers. The new ones produce hydrogen using proton-exchange membranes, which is much more environmentally friendly.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has said that hydrogen has the potential to play a significant role in the transition to 100% clean energy. DOE estimates that a single 1,000MWe reactor could produce up to 150,000 tons of hydrogen a year. It can be used across multiple sectors to store and deliver usable energy to power the grid, drive industrial processes, or create energy dense fuels needed for long-haul trucks and airplanes.

The coalition envisions transforming the Midwest into a powerhouse for low-carbon fuel production. It said it will use nuclear power generated by Energy Harbor’s Davis-Besse nuclear station to produce carbon-free hydrogen through electrolysis.
The coalition said the focus on clean hydrogen production through electrolysis avoids the challenge of capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide. Nuclear reactors can produce clean hydrogen by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. Methods are being explored to use nuclear energy to produce hydrogen from water by electrolysis, thermochemical, and hybrid processes.
In October 2021, Energy Harbor and the DOE agreed to develop a hydrogen production demonstration project at Davis-Besse in collaboration with Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Xcel Energy, and Arizona Public Service. The plant was chosen due to its proximity to key hydrogen consumers in the manufacturing and transportation sectors of the market.
