All remaining highly enriched uranium (HEU) from the Japan Atomic Energy Agency's (JAEA's) Japan Materials Testing Reactor Critical Assembly has now been returned to the USA. Japan and the USA have been cooperating for many years to repatriate HEU from Japanese research reactors to the USA.

Tokyo-based Itochu Corporation has agreed to accept shares of US-based fusion start-up Blue Laser Fusion (BLF) through a third-party allotment. Itochu also concluded a strategic and business alliance agreement with BLF regarding fusion energy-related businesses and other related businesses in which the laser technology developed by BLF will be used.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority and the private Japanese fusion technology company Kyoto Fusioneering have signed an agreement which aims to advance tritium breeding blanket technology from its conceptual stage towards commercialisation.

Construction has started on the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility-Demo Oriented NEutron Source (IFMIF-DONES) project in Granada, Spain. The facility will test materials for use in future fusion power reactors. Spain and Croatia are project leaders, with Spain funding 50% of all construction costs and 10% of operating costs, and Croatia responsible for 5% of each.

Japan’s Kyoto Fusioneering (KF) has raised JPY10.5bn ($79m) in an oversubscribed Series C funding round led by existing investor, JIC Venture Growth Investments. The round attracted a total of 17 investors, including 11 new supporters. KF said this latest capital infusion brings total funds raised to JPY12.2bn.

Japan’s Kyoto Fusioneering Ltd (KF) has completed the preliminary design of an integrated testing facility for fusion power plant equipment, with construction due to start in Japan around August. The facility, named UNITY- Unique Integrated Testing Facility - aims to demonstrate electricity generation using fusion relevant technologies in 2024.
