An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Safety Assessment for Research Reactors (INSARR) team of experts said the Philippines is committed to the safe operation of the Philippine Research Reactor-1 (PRR-1) Subcritical Assembly for Training, Education & Research (SATER) facility. This followed completion of recent commissioning tests and the start of its utilisation for training and education. The team also found the need for further improvement in the reactor’s operational organisation structure, its maintenance and operating procedures.

The Faculty of Nuclear Sciences & Physical Engineering (FNSPE) of the Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague has launched its second research and training reactor, VR-2. In addition to the two training reactors, the Research Centre in Rež operates two research reactors. The Faculty launched the VR-2 exactly a year after it announced that its construction had been authorised by the State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB). The new reactor is situated in the same reactor hall as VR-1, which has been operated by the Faculty since 1990.

The VR-2 research reactor, construction of which began last year, has entered operation at the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering (FNSPE) at the Czech Technical University (CTU) in Prague. The reactor will mainly be used for teaching nuclear engineering students.

Ontario Tech University has begun pre-licensing activities for a new facility to support its undergraduate nuclear engineering programmes and for applied nuclear engineering research. The facility will be unique in Canada.
